She stated that she would think, if a person found out they were going to die, they would want to live each day to its fullest. Be daring and do stupid things because their days were numbered. I thought for a moment and responded.
What if your days were numbered? Would you really want to impair your judgment for a day, an hour or even a second? Would you want to wake up on your now counted days and not remember the night before? Or, would you want to observe, sit back and watch as the world without a care goes on? Maybe that is his fun. To spend money worry free just to watch others live a happy day believing their life is eternal. A dose of reality would have to hit when you realize that forgetting moments meant to be remembered would make for an unhappy life. I don't think it is strange at all that this man chooses to care for others, be their designated driver after a night out, or watch them be care free while the weight of his world hangs on his shoulders. Maybe by helping others, he smiles, feels he did good that day and everyday until his last. A gentle heart living the rest of his days remembering the moments that count.
My friend looked back at me as I made her have a new found respect for this man we were about to meet. He was a socially awkward, geek of sorts, but represented to us a new perspective on life. He was questioned about his intentions spending so much money when going out. He took a deep breath and spoke. "I go out to watch as people live their lives being the best. On a night out, the immortals go to party. They dress up their best and shine their brightest. Now, I'm not the sharpest tool, brightest crayon or an attractive guy so going out with the people I care about and making sure they stay safe makes me happy. I spend so much on a night out because for every pop I order, I also tip twenty dollars. I know how hard life is and want to be someone who helps make it a bit easier. I live each day to its fullest by helping people who may still think they are invincible. I just hope, by my example, they too would choose to live and remember each day when the end becomes visible."
Different people would choose different ways to live if they had the knowledge of numbered days. Not everybody would be content sitting back and watching but all of us would fear the end. Some may party hard and try to forget. Others may be daring, courageous and bold until their final day. Some of us will have our final day without any prior knowledge. I think there is something to be said for remembering life instead of trying to forget it. Treasuring memories and burying heartache instead of dwelling. If you are still breathing, there will be another day, another sunrise and a new beginning. There is always a time to change or to better a life gone astray. If your days were counted, why spend them upset? Truth is, each day we live is another behind us so make everyday the best until our last.
